Understanding Risk Factors for Total Ankle Replacement Failure — Dr. Henry Speaks at AOFAS 2022 in Canada

QUEBEC CITY — In this video from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Annual Meeting, Jensen K. Henry, MD, discussed risk factors for early mechanical failure and revision after total ankle replacement.

“We found patients who had greater weights were at increased risk for failure, especially as that increases by every 10-[kilogram] increment. We found that patients who had concomitant hindfoot fusion were significantly more likely to have failure,” Henry said. “Then finally, we found that the use of the stemmed implant can mitigate these failures.”

It is important to remember that even if a patient has a risk factor, they are not automatically disqualified from surgery! It just means we have to use surgical techniques and other strategies to maximize their chances of success.
